Explanation

For the first 180 days, driving is normally prohibited from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. After 180 days, a driver under 18 faces the manual’s weekday and weekend hour limits.

Exceptions cover lawful employment, a school-sanctioned activity, a religious event, and driving with a qualifying licensed adult age 25 or older or licensed spouse age 21 or older.

Example

An under-18 driver who has held the probationary license for more than 180 days may return from lawful employment during an otherwise restricted period.

Common mistake

Using the first-180-day 10 p.m.–5 a.m. rule as the later schedule for every driver under 18. The schedules differ.

For the first 180 days after obtaining your probationary driver’s license, you may not drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
