Explanation

On a base driver’s license, endorsement L marks a motorcycle endorsement and endorsement 2 marks a for-hire endorsement. These are separate from the restriction codes and appear alongside them in the same lower-left area of the credential.

Separately, BMV examiners decide whether a driver’s license needs restrictions for an applicant whose disability affects normal operation of a standard-equipped vehicle. A restricted license can specify particular equipment the driver needs, or other accommodations for that person’s specific needs.

Example

A credential showing “Endorsements: L” belongs to a driver who has completed the requirements for a motorcycle endorsement.

Common mistake

Assuming every disability automatically produces the same restriction. The manual says BMV examiners determine restrictions individually, based on the specific disability and the specific vehicle.

What the manual says

BMV examiners determine whether to issue a driver’s license with restrictions to an individual with disabilities affecting his or her normal operation of a standard-equipped vehicle.
