Chapter 5 · Lesson 5 of 13
Driver Safety Program
5 min read · Points, Suspensions, and Insurance Requirements
Explanation
Completing a BMV-approved DSP may earn a four-point credit, limited to one credit in a three-year period. If the BMV requires the course by mailed notice, it must be completed within 90 days or driving privileges are suspended until completion is processed.
The BMV may require a driver age 21 or older after two or more traffic offenses within 12 months. A driver under 21 may be required after two or more traffic offenses. A judge may also order a DSP, but the four-point credit applies only to a BMV-approved course.
Example
A driver receives a BMV notice dated today. The driver must successfully complete the approved DSP within 90 days to avoid suspension.
Common mistake
Assuming every court-selected course automatically earns the four-point credit. The completed course must be BMV-approved.
What the manual says
Each driver is allowed one four-point credit during a three-year period.
Failure to complete a DSP course within 90 days from the date of the BMV’s mailed notice will result in the suspension of your driving privileges.
