Explanation

After finishing a Driver Safety Program course, allow 7 to 10 business days for the BMV to process the completion results. If the vehicle involved in an incident was company-owned or a rental, it’s not the driver who files the financial-responsibility affidavit: the employer or the rental company fills out State Form 55434 to prove the vehicle was covered. And if a court — Indiana or out-of-state — convicts you of driving without insurance, the removal of that conviction from your record runs through the court, not the BMV: contact the court to see if providing proof of insurance can get it removed.

Separately, if you owe a no-insurance reinstatement fee, there are several ways to pay it: online at myBMV.com, by phone, in person at a BMV Connect kiosk, or by mail using the reinstatement fee coupon the BMV sends you.

Example

A delivery driver gets into an accident in a company van. Because the van is company-owned, the employer — not the driver — completes State Form 55434 to show the vehicle carried the required insurance.

Common mistake

Assuming a no-insurance conviction can only be cleared through the BMV. The manual directs you to the convicting court itself to find out whether proof of insurance can remove that conviction from your record.

What the manual says

Allow 7 to 10 business days for completion results to be processed by the BMV.

If you are convicted by an Indiana court, or by an out-of-state court, for operating a vehicle without insurance, you must contact the court to determine if you can provide proof of insurance to them to remove the conviction from your driving record.

You may pay reinstatement fees at myBMV.com, by telephone at 888-692-6841, at a BMV Connect kiosk, or by mail using the reinstatement fee coupon that you receive in the mail from the BMV.
