Explanation

Where to stop. At a red light or stop sign, stop at the solid white stop line. If there is no stop line, stop before the crosswalk on your side. If there is no crosswalk, stop before entering the intersection.

Yield sign. Slow down and be ready to stop completely if a vehicle or pedestrian with the right of way is coming. After you go, a vehicle with the right of way should not have to brake to avoid you.

Signal not working. Stop before entering the intersection. Then go with caution only after yielding to:

  • cross traffic already in the intersection,
  • any vehicle that stopped before you,
  • any vehicle that arrived at the same time and is on your right,
  • pedestrians.

No sign or signal. Before entering a street from an alley or driveway, stop and yield to other vehicles.

Example

A storm knocked out the power. At a dark signal you stop, and a car on your right stops at the same moment. It goes first; you go after it clears.

Common mistake

Pulling out at a yield sign so that an oncoming driver has to brake. If they had to brake, you did not yield.

What the manual says

If you are approaching a red light or a stop sign, you must stop at the solid white stop line.

If you are approaching a yield sign, a vehicle approaching from another direction with the right of way should not have to brake to avoid a collision with you.

If you are approaching an intersection with a non-operating signal, you should stop before entering the intersection.

Before entering a street from an alley or driveway, you should stop and yield the right of way to other vehicles.
