Explanation

Warning signs prepare drivers for upcoming road conditions and hazards. Diamond-shaped signs give the same kind of warning. Among the manual’s warning signs, these name something about the road itself:

  • Lanes: Added Lane, Lane Ends, Lanes Shifting, Merging Traffic.
  • Road layout: Intersection Ahead, Side Road, “T” Intersection, Divided Highway Begins, Two-Way Traffic.
  • Curves and hills: Curve Ahead, Sharp Turn Slow Down, Winding Road, Steep Downgrade.
  • Surface and edges: Slippery When Wet, Watch For Ice On Bridges, Low Shoulder, Narrow Bridge.
  • Clearance and objects: Low Clearance, Object Markers.

Example

A Lane Ends sign appears ahead. It is a warning sign: it prepares you for the upcoming road condition — the lane ending — before you reach it.

Common mistake

Ignoring a warning sign because it doesn’t state a rule. Warning signs exist to prepare you for upcoming road conditions and hazards.
