Chapter 7 · Lesson 34 of 38
Where you may not park
3 min read · Safe Vehicle Operation
Figures in this lesson
Explanation
Parking is prohibited:
- on highways (unless marked otherwise);
- within intersections or on crosswalks;
- on sidewalks or in front of any driveway;
- within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, or in fire lanes;
- on bridges or other elevated structures, or in a tunnel;
- next to yellow curbs;
- beside another parked vehicle (double parking);
- in spaces reserved for people with disabilities, unless you have a valid placard;
- in the diagonally striped area next to an accessible space — even with a valid placard. That space lets a wheelchair user transfer in and out of a vehicle or deploy a ramp.
Example
You see an open curb space with a fire hydrant just a car length away. You pace it out: the space is within 15 feet of the hydrant, so you keep looking.
Common mistake
Thinking a disability placard lets you use the striped area beside an accessible space. It never does.
What the manual says
Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant or in fire lanes
Parking in this striped area is prohibited even if you are in possession of a valid parking placard.
