Chapter 7 · Lesson 3 of 38
When passing is illegal
3 min read · Safe Vehicle Operation
Signs in this lesson
Explanation
It is dangerous and illegal to pass when:
- a solid yellow line is on your side of the center line;
- a yellow pennant-shaped No Passing Zone sign is posted on the left side of the road, or a white rectangular Do Not Pass sign on the right side;
- you are on or approaching a curve;
- you are approaching the crest of a hill or grade;
- you are within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing, bridge, viaduct or tunnel.
Example
You’re following a slow car toward a hilltop. The line on your side is still broken, but you can’t see what is coming over the crest. Passing here is illegal — wait until you are past the hill and can see clearly.
Common mistake
Starting to pass just before a bridge or intersection “because the line was still broken.” Passing is illegal within 100 feet of these places.
