Explanation

Slow-moving vehicles. Farm vehicles, construction equipment and animal-drawn vehicles may share the road. Use care approaching and passing them, and watch for the slow-moving vehicle emblem on the rear.

Horses. A horseback rider or a horse-drawn vehicle driver has the same rights and responsibilities as a motor vehicle driver on a public highway. Approach with caution and watch for their hand signals.

Officers. A law enforcement officer may direct traffic at an intersection. If the officer’s command differs from a signal or sign, obey the officer.

Processions. Official processions, such as funeral processions, have the right of way even if the traffic signal says otherwise.

Example

After a ball game, a police officer is directing traffic at a busy intersection. Your light is green, but the officer holds up a hand for you to stop. You stop.

Common mistake

Cutting into a funeral procession because your light turned green. The procession keeps the right of way.

What the manual says

Certain slow-moving farm vehicles, construction equipment, and vehicles drawn by animals may share roadways. You should use care when approaching and passing these vehicles. Be alert for the special emblem that the driver must place on the rear of the slow-moving vehicle.

In such a case, the law enforcement officer’s command is the one that must be obeyed.

Official processions, such as a funeral procession, have the right of way regardless of a traffic signal that indicates otherwise.
