Explanation

Reduce vehicle-theft risk by removing the keys, locking the doors, not hiding a second set of keys, never leaving the engine running unattended, considering an anti-theft device and parking in well-lit, well-patrolled areas. The manual also says to turn the front wheels sharply right and apply the emergency brake.

When an officer initiates a traffic stop, turn on your right turn signal. This acknowledges the officer and shows that you recognize the request to stop.

Example

You park in a lighted area, turn the front wheels sharply right, apply the emergency brake, take the keys and lock the doors. Later, when an officer signals you to stop, you turn on the right signal to acknowledge the officer.

Common mistake

Leaving a running vehicle unattended for “just a moment.” The manual says never to do it.

What the manual says

Never leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running

Acknowledge the officer’s presence by turning on your right turn signal.
