Explanation

An adult who signed for a minor’s financial liability may withdraw it. A written withdrawal cancels the minor’s learner’s permit or driver’s license. To obtain an amended learner’s permit, the minor needs a new person to sign for financial liability.

A driver’s license held by someone under age 21 is considered a probationary driver’s license.

Example

An adult files the written request to cancel financial liability. The minor’s permit is canceled and the minor must apply for an amended permit with a new signer.

Common mistake

Assuming withdrawal only removes the adult’s responsibility. It also cancels the minor’s permit or license.

What the manual says

A written request to withdraw financial liability will cancel the minor’s learner’s permit or driver’s license

If you are under the age of 21, your driver’s license is considered a “probationary” driver’s license.
