Explanation

An applicant under age 18 who is seeking a learner’s permit or probationary driver’s license must have a qualifying adult sign a sworn or affirmed statement of financial liability. The adult signs it in person at a BMV branch.

Example

A 17-year-old applying for a probationary license goes to a BMV branch with a qualifying adult, who signs the financial-liability statement there.

Common mistake

Assuming the applicant may take the statement home for the adult to sign. The manual says the adult signs it in person at a BMV branch.

Applicants for a learner’s permit or probationary driver’s license who are less than 18 years of age must have one of the following adults sign a sworn or affirmed statement of financial liability in person at a BMV branch.
