Chapter 1 · Lesson 9 of 21
Probationary practice and validity
4 min read · Obtaining a New Credential
Explanation
An applicant under 18 completes supervised practice with a qualifying licensed relative age 25 or older, licensed spouse age 21 or older, driver-training instructor, or certified rehabilitation specialist.
A license obtained before 21 is probationary until age 21. It remains valid until age 21 years and 30 days, but may first be renewed at age 21 years and one day.
Example
A driver turns 21 today. The probationary license is still valid, but renewal begins tomorrow—not today.
Common mistake
Confusing the first renewal date, 21 years and one day, with the validity end, 21 years and 30 days.
What the manual says
Your probationary driver’s license is valid until you are 21 years and 30 days of age.
You may not renew your probationary driver’s license until you are 21 years and one day of age.
