Explanation

A learner’s permit holder enrolled at a BMV-licensed driver training school that participates in the BMV’s driving skills test program can take the skills exam right there, after finishing the course’s 30 hours of theoretical training and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. A pass through the school stays valid until the learner’s permit itself expires. Two situations send you to a BMV branch instead: failing either portion of the driver education course, or attending a school that doesn’t participate in the skills test program.

Scheduling a BMV-administered exam means booking through IN.gov/BMV or the BMV Contact Center, no more than three weeks and no less than 48 business hours ahead (an in-person branch visit may get you in sooner). You bring your own vehicle, and there’s no charge.

Beyond the driver-ed pathway, a BMV-examiner skills exam is required for most learner’s permit holders (unless they already passed one through an approved school) and for several other situations — among them, Indiana residents whose license has been expired more than five years, several new-resident cases, drivers with a BMV restriction requiring testing, and certain medical-related evaluations.

Example

A learner’s permit holder finishes driver ed with passing grades at a school that runs the BMV’s skills test program, so they test right there — no separate branch appointment needed, and the pass is good until their permit expires.

Common mistake

Assuming any driver training school administers the skills exam. The manual requires the school to participate in the BMV’s driving skills test program — if it doesn’t, or if either driver-ed grade was a fail, the exam has to happen at a BMV branch instead.

What the manual says

If you have a learner’s permit and attend a BMV licensed driver training school that participates in the BMV’s driving skills test program, you may take the driving skills exam with the school after successful completion of the course, which includes 30 hours of theoretical training and six hours of behind-the-wheel training.

A driving skills exam may be scheduled no more than three weeks, and no less than 48 business hours, ahead of time.

A driving skills exam given by a BMV examiner is required for the following: Drivers with an Indiana learner’s permit, unless the driver has successfully completed a skills exam with an approved driver training school
