Explanation

Indiana law defines a motor driven cycle (MDC) as a vehicle with a seat or saddle, no more than three wheels touching the ground, compliant equipment, a cylinder capacity of 50cc or less, and registration as an MDC.

You can add an MDC endorsement to your ID card by passing the MDC knowledge exam — but if you already hold a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license, you don’t need the endorsement at all.

Operating rules apply regardless of endorsement: the rider must be at least 15; riders under 18 need a helmet and protective eyewear; the rider sits astride the seat with headlamps on, carries no package in hand, stays near the right edge of the roadway except when passing or turning left, never exceeds 35 mph, carries no passengers, and never uses an interstate highway or sidewalk.

Example

A 16-year-old with a valid Indiana driver’s license rides a 49cc MDC. She does not need a separate MDC endorsement because her driver’s license already covers it — but she still must wear a helmet and protective eyewear because she is under 18.

Common mistake

Assuming any small-engine vehicle qualifies as an MDC. The manual’s definition requires all listed conditions together, including the 50cc cap and MDC registration — a larger-displacement vehicle does not qualify.

What the manual says
