Explanation

A first-time Indiana driver’s license applicant who is 16 or older and has completed a motorcycle safety course can add the motorcycle endorsement at the same time as the first license. Drivers of any age can qualify for the endorsement either by completing an approved Ride Safe Indiana safety course, or by passing both the motorcycle knowledge exam and the riding skills exam.

New Indiana residents who already hold a valid out-of-state motorcycle endorsement or motorcycle license may add the endorsement to their Indiana license just by passing the motorcycle knowledge exam.

The endorsement is valid for the same period as the driver’s license and can be renewed up to two years before the license expires. If your license already carries the endorsement and is unexpired, you don’t pay the endorsement fee again at renewal.

Example

A 17-year-old getting her first Indiana driver’s license has already completed a motorcycle safety course, so she receives the motorcycle endorsement at the same time as the license — no separate knowledge or skills exam required.

Common mistake

Assuming every applicant must pass the knowledge and skills exams. The manual gives two separate paths: a completed safety course, or both exams — either one qualifies.

What the manual says

To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, drivers of all ages must successfully complete a motorcycle safety course with an approved Ride Safe Indiana provider or pass both the motorcycle knowledge and riding skills exams.
