Explanation

If a credential is lost while its holder is temporarily living outside Indiana, an interim credential may be obtained, subject to certain qualifications. When neither the residential address nor name has changed, a credential can be replaced or renewed online at myBMV.com if the holder is eligible — and a credential may be renewed online or at a BMV Connect kiosk every other renewal.

Expiration timing differs by credential type: a probationary driver’s license expires at 21 years and 30 days of age (and can be renewed online if the holder qualifies), while other credentials generally expire at midnight on the holder’s birthday. The manual says expiration dates vary for residents with temporary lawful status. If that birthday falls on a day BMV branches are closed, the credential instead expires at midnight the next business day. Renewing after the expiration date brings an administrative penalty, no matter the credential type.

Example

A driver whose birthday falls on a Sunday when branches are closed still has until midnight the next business day (Monday) before the credential expires.

Common mistake

Assuming every credential expires by a fixed 21st-birthday rule. Only probationary driver’s licenses use the 21-years-and-30-days rule; the general rule for other credentials is midnight on the birthday, with the manual’s stated variations.

What the manual says

A probationary driver’s license expires when the card holder is 21 years and 30 days of age. A probationary driver’s license may be renewed online if the holder meets the requirements. All other credentials expire at midnight on your birthday.

All individuals are subject to an administrative penalty if your credential is renewed after the expiration date.
