Regulation signs: lanes and turns
5 min read · Traffic Signs and Signals
Signs in this lesson
Explanation
Traffic regulation signs regulate traffic speed as well as movement, and display rules which drivers must obey. Rectangular signs can convey such regulations, including turn movement prohibitions like No Left Turn. Among the manual’s regulation signs, these control lanes and turns:
- Lanes: Left Lane Must Turn Left, Right Lane Must Turn Right, Right Lane Only, Turn Left or Go Through, Turn Right or Go Through, Multiple Turns, Restricted Lane, Two-Way Left Turn, Keep Right.
- Turns and signals: Left on Green Arrow Only, Left Turn Signal, Left Turn Yield on Green.
- Prohibitions: No Left Turn, No Right Turn, No U-Turn, No Turn on Red.
- Direction: One Way (two versions).
Example
You are in the left lane under a Left Lane Must Turn Left sign. It is a regulation sign — a rule you must obey — so from that lane you turn left.
Common mistake
Treating a regulation sign as advice. Regulation signs display rules which drivers must obey.
