Chapter 1 · Lesson 4 of 21
Learner's-permit validity and renewal
3 min read · Obtaining a New Credential
Explanation
A learner’s permit is normally valid for two years from its issue date. A permit issued to a lawful temporary resident expires on that person’s end-of-stay date, so it may have a different validity period.
When a learner’s permit has been expired for more than 180 days, renewing it at a BMV branch requires retesting.
Example
A permit expired 181 days ago. Because that is more than 180 days, the holder must retest when renewing it.
Common mistake
Treating 180 days as the trigger. The manual says more than 180 days.
What the manual says
Learner’s permits are valid for two years from the date of issuance.
If you are visiting a BMV branch to renew your learner’s permit and it has been expired more than 180 days, you are required to retest.
