Chapter 1 · Lesson 2 of 21
Supervising permit practice
5 min read · Obtaining a New Credential
Explanation
Permit supervision depends on the learner’s age and driver-education enrollment. A learner under 16 in driver education may drive with a qualifying instructor or rehabilitation specialist, a licensed relative age 25 or older, or a licensed spouse age 21 or older.
A learner under 18 who is not in driver education has similar relative and spouse choices and may also use a qualifying driver-training instructor or rehabilitation specialist.
The supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat. A supervising licensed driver must have valid privileges that are not expired, suspended or revoked.
Example
A 17-year-old who is not enrolled in driver education practices with a licensed relative age 27. The relative has valid privileges and sits in the front passenger seat.
Common mistake
Checking only the supervisor’s age. The required relationship or professional role, valid driving privileges and front-seat position also matter.
What the manual says
