Indiana Road Signs: Shapes, Colors and Meanings
Last reviewed
On this page
Road signs are one of the two parts of the Indiana knowledge test, so it pays to know them well. The good news is that signs follow a code. If you know the shape and the color, you can often tell what kind of sign it is before you can read a word on it. This guide walks through that code using Chapter 6 of the July 2026 Indiana Driver’s Manual. Each fact has a “Manual p.” link.
Why sign shapes and colors matter
Traffic signs control traffic flow so that streets and highways are safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. They use colors, shapes, written messages, and symbols to help you understand the information quickly (Manual p. 27). That “quickly” part is the whole point. On a busy road you may only see a sign for a second, and the shape and color are what you read first.
Sign colors and what they mean
The background color tells you the type of information on the sign. The manual says seven colors are commonly used (Manual p. 27).
| Color | What it tells you | Example from the manual |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Regulations that need immediate action to avoid threats to traffic safety | Wrong Way |
| Yellow or fluorescent yellow-green | Road conditions and hazards ahead, and nearby school zones | Slippery When Wet |
| White | Regulations you must obey, such as speed limits, plus helpful information like state highway markers | No Turn on Red |
| Orange | Temporary traffic conditions, often from highway construction and maintenance | Flagger Ahead |
| Green | Permitted movements, directions, and guidance, such as exits and distances | A distance sign |
| Blue | Road services and information | Amenities at an exit |
| Brown | Nearby recreational and cultural interest sites | A state park |
The meanings in the table come from the manual’s color descriptions (Manual p. 27). Fluorescent yellow-green signs get their own mention: they warn drivers of nearby schools, pedestrians, bicycles, playgrounds, and school bus routes (Manual p. 27).
A quick way to sort them: red and white signs are about rules, yellow and orange signs are about hazards and changes ahead, and green, blue, and brown signs are about where you are going and what is nearby.
Sign shapes and what they mean
The shape of a sign also shows its type of information. The manual lists seven common shapes (Manual p. 28):
- Circle. Alerts drivers to an upcoming railroad crossing.
- Equilateral triangle (three equal sides). Warns drivers to slow down when approaching an intersection and be ready to come to a complete stop to yield to other drivers or pedestrians.
- Pennant. Posted on the left-hand side of two-way roads to warn drivers not to pass other vehicles on the left.
- Rectangle. Shows one of three types of information: regulations (such as speed limits and “No Left Turn”), helpful information (such as route markers and destination signs), or a warning such as an advisory speed for a sharp curve.
- Diamond. Warns of upcoming road conditions and hazards. “Slippery When Wet” is an example.
- Five-sided (pentagon). Warns that you are entering an area near a school where children may be crossing the road.
- Eight-sided (octagon). Warns that you must stop and yield the appropriate right of way at an intersection.
The shape is a clue even before you can read the words. Our lesson on sign shapes has quick practice on this.
The main kinds of signs
Chapter 6 groups signs into families. Each family has its own study page on this site, where you can tap a sign to see its meaning and what to do.
- Warning signs prepare drivers for upcoming road conditions and hazards (Manual p. 29). Browse the warning signs.
- Construction and maintenance signs are orange and warn drivers to be careful approaching construction zones (Manual p. 30). Browse the construction signs.
- Railroad signs alert drivers to upcoming railroad crossings (Manual p. 30). Browse the railroad signs.
- School zone signs are yellow or fluorescent yellow-green (Manual p. 30). Browse the school signs.
- Slow-moving vehicle emblem. It has an orange, fluorescent center and red reflective borders, and it marks a slow-moving vehicle that cannot exceed 25 miles per hour (Manual p. 30).
- Regulation signs regulate traffic speed and movement and display rules drivers must obey (Manual p. 31). Browse the regulatory signs.
- Guidance signs give information about the type of road, upcoming highway entrances and exits, and distances to destinations (Manual p. 32). Browse the guidance signs.
- Driver services and recreation signs give information about nearby amenities, parks, and recreational areas (Manual p. 33). Browse the services signs.
You can see all of them together on the road signs page.
Traffic signals
Signals are part of the same chapter. A green light lets you go if the intersection is clear; a steady yellow means your right of way is ending, though you may finish moving if you are too close to stop safely; and a red light means stop (Manual p. 33). The manual separately describes permitted turns on red after a full stop (Manual p. 34), as well as turning arrows and flashing lights. Start with our lesson on signal lights.
How signs show up on the knowledge test
Chapter 9 of the manual says the sign part of the exam tests your knowledge of common signs, and that those signs are in Chapter 6 (Manual p. 63). The manual’s own sample sign questions show the style: several ask what the shape of a sign indicates (Manual p. 63). That is a good reason to learn shapes first. We do not copy the manual’s sample questions. Our practice questions are written for study, and they are not the real exam.
On the real test you need 80% or higher on the signs part by itself (Manual p. 63). Our guide to the Indiana knowledge test explains that rule.
A simple way to memorize signs
- Learn colors and shapes first. Seven colors and seven shapes cover a lot of ground.
- Go one family at a time. Do warning signs, then regulation signs, then the rest.
- Cover the name. Use the sign pages or flashcards and try to say the meaning before you look.
- Retest after a day. Come back and quiz yourself on the signs you missed.
When you are ready, a mock exam scores signs separately from traffic rules, the same way the 80% rule works.
Frequently asked questions
What does an octagon sign mean in Indiana?
The manual says eight-sided signs warn drivers that they must stop and yield the appropriate right of way at an intersection. That is the shape of a stop sign.
What does a yellow road sign mean?
Yellow signs prepare drivers for specific road conditions and hazards ahead, and fluorescent yellow-green versions alert drivers to nearby school zones.
What does an orange road sign mean?
Orange signs warn drivers of temporary traffic conditions, such as work on a highway.
What shape is a railroad crossing sign?
Circular. The manual says circular signs alert drivers to upcoming railroad crossings.
What does a five-sided sign mean?
It warns drivers that they are entering an area near a school where children may be crossing the road.
What do green road signs show?
Permitted movements, directions, and guidance, such as highway entrances and exits or the distance to upcoming destinations.
